Projector Screens Buyers Guide

What is the purpose of a projector screen?

In order to get the best out of your projector, it is very important to have a dedicated projector screen. This is because a high-quality projector screen reflects much more light than a white wall, resulting in a brighter and more intense image. Any imperfections in a wall or other surface will also cause distortions and blurring of the projected image, whereas a projector screen has a perfectly flat surface that gives a sharp and even image. Projector screens can also be portable or retractable, which means you do not need an empty wall to project onto.

How to choose the right projector screen for you

Different types of projector screen

When buying a projector screen, there are 3 main types to choose from:

Hanging Projector Screen

Retractable wall-mounted projector screens

These projector screens are attached to the wall or ceiling, with the screen stored in a slim case when not in use. There are manual and motorised versions of these screens. A retractable screen can be hidden when not being used, which is great for mixed-use spaces such as classrooms and conference centres.

Fixed Projector Screen

Fixed wall projection screens

Fixed projection screens remain in place between uses, which makes them more suitable for dedicated viewing spaces, such as home cinemas and boardrooms. Combined whiteboard/projection screens offer a versatile solution for classrooms and offices.

Freestanding Projector Screen

Mobile projection screens

Portable projector screens can be set up anywhere, turning any space into a cinema. Mobile screens come in floor standing, tripod-mounted, and table-top versions. The ability to transport these screens to where they are needed makes them ideal for temporary events, exhibitions, and projecting in shared-use spaces.

What ratio do I need?

The screen ratio is the ratio between the height and width of the projected image. The most common screen ratios are 16:10 (WXGA and WUXGA), 16:9 (standard HDTV, 1080p), and 4:3(XGA and SXGA). The 16:10 and 16:9 sizes are widescreen ratios that are often used for films, while 4:3 is the standard video ratio that is often used for video and computer monitors. The most important thing when choosing a projector screen ratio is to match it with the ratio of your projector - if your projector is 4:3, it is generally best to choose a 4:3 screen.

What size projector screen should I buy?

The size of the projector screen you need depends on the size of the room you will be projecting in and how close the audience will be to the screen. A good method for estimating the right screen size for your space is to set up your projector in the position where you want to use it and to project onto a wall where you want to have the screen. Adjust the projector to get the desired image size and then measure the projected image using a tape measure.

We stock a wide range of projector sizes suitable for small rooms through to large lecture theatres. With sizes from 985 x 740 mm through to 3000 x 3000 mm you are sure to find the ideal projection screen for your space.

Screen gain and why it is important

The gain of a screen is a measurement of its reflectivity. This is important because it tells you how much of the light from your projector is reflected back toward the audience and how bright and strong the image will be. A screen gain ratio of 1 means that 100% of the light from the projector is reflected back to the viewer - a gain of 0.7 would be 70% and a gain of 1.3 would be 130%. Higher screen values can have smaller viewing angles, so it is often best to choose a screen gain of 1 for general use.

Projector screen mounting options

Manual pull-down and motorised projector screens can be attached to a wall or ceiling, with many of our projector screens having the option of being both ceiling- or wall-mounted. We can supply extension brackets to move the screen out from the wall, to give clearance for use with whiteboards, shelving, and other equipment. Fixed projector screens can be attached directly to a wall.

Motorised or manual projector screens

Motorised screens automatically lower and retract with a smooth electric mechanism. In addition to providing a sense of professionalism, these motorised screens can be operated by a remote from the back of the room, making projecting easier. Key controlled remotes are a great option for use in schools and colleges. Manual screens are generally cheaper than motorised models and are suitable for less-frequent use.
